
Before we begin, hip hop fashion and street fashion are NOT the same thing. Street fashion is more about taking everyday clothes and turning them into a fashion statement and Hip Hop fashion is centered around colorful and oversized jackets and pants. In actual fact, hip-hop fashion came about by default.
This specific genre of fashion started in the 1980s. Throughout the 80s, the genre began becoming affected by the coast, and people like Will Smith began introducing things like high top sneakers and Flat hair fashions. Hip-hop fashion is regarded as a representation of “cool.”
Who remembers the old school parkas?! Those were one of the most abused fashion items when the hip hop style culture started. Baseball caps also became well-known among rappers in the early 1990 s, motivated by the gangsters of old sideways and were, and were frequently times brightly colored, as influenced by African dress. Then came Pharrell. As N.E.R.D. turned the urban music technicolour, Pharrell gave hip-hop style new notes – skate, Japanese streetwear, punk. He created a world in which Kanye West could rock a backpack and pink polo and still outsell 50 Cent.
